What is drug testing?
Drugs eventually show up in body fluids and hair in one form or another. There are five primary types of drug tests: urine, hair, blood, saliva, and sweat. The most commonly used specimens are urine, hair and blood.
Urine analysis is less invasive than blood analysis, typically the least expensive, and can detect infrequent or recent single use. Hair analysis is the least invasive, but may not reveal recent use. In hair, certain drugs can be detected for longer periods historically, but typically only for heavy-duty and continuous use. Blood analysis is the most accurate, but most invasive. Office can perform any of these tests but generally suggests urine analysis due to accuracy, price and level of invasiveness.
Reasons to order a drug test
Pre-employment screening
Compared to the cost of even one employee with a substance abuse problem, most firms find eliminating the problem in the first place well worth the time and money involved in a drug-testing program.
The purpose is to lessen the impact from drug abuse in the workplace, including tardiness, absenteeism, turnover, attitude problems, theft, deceased productivity, crime and violence. The US Department of Labor estimates that drug use in the workplace costs employers $75 to $100 billion dollars annually in lost time, accidents, health care and workers compensation costs. Sixty-five percent of all accidents on the job are related to drug or alcohol, and substance abusers utilize 16 times as many health care benefits and are six times more likely to file workers compensation claims than non-abusers.
Pre-employment drug screening is an employer’s first line of defense when screening prospectiveemployees. Since pre-employment drug testing is performed on approximately 1/3 of America's job seekers, serious employment prospects should be aware employers will most likely require them to submit to a drug screen and will likely only be hired based upon a negative result.
Random drug screen for current employees
Random testing is a popular choice among employers due to its high deterrent effect. Employers may choose a random selection frequency of monthly or quarterly. True random testing is conducted by pooling a selected amount of numbers determined by the employer from the total number of qualified participants' numbers in the random pool. A computer program written to ensure that each time a selection is made, every employee has an equal chance of being chosen may be used to electronically generate random lists.
Every employee should be discreetly notified according to your company’s policy, but random testing must also be conducted in strict confidence with a limited number of people having knowledge of the selection list. Why? Because it helps maintain the element of surprise.
As a suggestion, every employer should have procedures in place to ensure that each employee receives no advanced notice of selection. But, be sure to allow sufficient time for supervisors to schedule for the administration of the test and to ensure that collection sites are available for testing. Remember: Employers must provide appropriate privacy for each employee the fact that he or she is being tested.
Employers are required to maintain testing records in accordance with industry specific regulations
Teen Drug Use
With all the online do it yourself drug tests why are so many parents seeking these tests at a Physician’s office? Answer is simple “trust”. Teens that use drugs often already question their parent’s authority and when parents suspect teens are using drugs these accusations can put further strain on the relationship. By using a third party such as a health care professional there is no longer an issue of test validity because the authority of the medical examiner reinforces the results. Parents are not trained to interpret “false positives” and “false negatives” and these results could cause parents to wrongfully accuse their teen.
How to talk to your teen about drug testing
The Talk: There's something I want to talk with you about that is very important. Before we begin, I want you to know that I love you and that I am very proud of you. You're getting to the age where other kids, if they haven't already, are going to start exposing you to things like drugs, alcohol and tobacco. I know that you know better than to mess with that stuff and it's part of my job as a parent to make sure that you don't. Having been a teenager once myself, I know what kind of pressure friends can apply. So, I want to give you an excuse that will help you get rid of the pressure. All you have to do is tell them that you can't because your parents know of a facility that test for those substances and that they test you regularly. When you get older and apply for a job or want to join the military, you'll have to take drug and sometimes alcohol tests. You're at the age now where it's time we start doing them randomly at the doctor’s office. Here’s why we’ve decided this and here’s how it’s going to work.
Life is about choices. If you make good choices you get rewards. If you make poor choices, there are consequences. When it comes to drug use we are going to have the same deal. When it comes to this stuff, we are going to test randomly and agree that there will be worthwhile rewards for your ability to resist peer pressure and make good choices as well as significant consequences if you don’t. I totally expect drug free results and it’s my hope that you look forward to test days since you’ll end up getting some cool stuff that you wouldn't have received otherwise and I’m glad to get it for you in exchange for my peace of mind. Fair enough?
Drug Test Steps Outline
Step 1. Suggest and agree on appropriate rewards: Examples might include, CD/DVD/Xbox game/Cell phone privileges/Driving privileges/Internet privileges/Movie tickets, etc.
Step 2. Suggest and agree upon consequences and timelines for earning privileges back: (First offense, second offense, third offense)
Step 3: Put it in writing (Unnecessary misunderstandings and miscommunications won’t be helpful and can easily be prevented)
Step 4: Schedule a Drug Test appointment and continue testing your teen at intervals that you feel are adequate for peace mind.
